Not All “Blackworms” Are Really Blackworms: What Aquarium Keepers Need to Know
At Super Cichlids, we believe fish food should be honest, clean, and clearly labeled. That is why we want to help customers understand an important issue we are seeing more often online: some websites are selling Tubifex wormswhile calling them Blackworms.
That matters.
True freshwater Blackworms — often called California Blackworms in the aquarium hobby — are scientifically known as Lumbriculus variegatus.
Tubifex worms are not Blackworms. Tubifex worms are commonly identified by the scientific name Tubifex tubifex.
Both are aquatic worms, and both have been used as fish food, but they are different organisms. A product made from Tubifex tubifex should not be sold or advertised as Blackworms, Lumbriculus variegatus.
Quick Scientific Name Guide
Real Blackworms
Scientific name: Lumbriculus variegatus
Tubifex Worms
Scientific name: Tubifex tubifex
Different names. Different organisms. Different products.
Why the Difference Matters
Aquarium fish keepers buy Blackworms because they are known as a premium, highly palatable food that many fish respond to aggressively. Blackworms, Lumbriculus variegatus, have long been valued by breeders, hobbyists, and serious fish keepers because they are an excellent feeding option for conditioning fish, encouraging picky eaters, and supporting a strong feeding response.
Tubifex worms, commonly identified as Tubifex tubifex, have a different reputation in the hobby. Depending on how they are sourced, handled, cleaned, and processed, Tubifex worms have historically raised more concern among aquarium keepers.
The problem is not simply that Tubifex exists. The problem is when Tubifex worms are sold under the name “Blackworms,” leaving customers thinking they are buying one product when they may actually be receiving another.
That is not fair to customers.
Blackworms vs. Tubifex: They Are Not the Same Worm
| Real Blackworms | Tubifex Worms |
|---|---|
| Common name: Blackworms / California Blackworms | Common name: Tubifex worms |
| Scientific name: Lumbriculus variegatus | Scientific name: Tubifex tubifex |
| Premium aquarium food | Different aquatic worm |
| Valued by breeders and hobbyists | Often sold as a lower-cost worm food |
| Should be clearly labeled as Blackworms | Should not be sold as Blackworms |
A product made from Tubifex tubifex should not be advertised as Blackworms. Customers deserve to know exactly what they are buying and exactly what they are feeding their fish.

Beware of Misleading Online Listings
When shopping online, be especially careful with listings that use location-based or “state” names for Blackworms.
Names like “Colorado Blackworms,” “New York Blackworms,” “Florida Blackworms,” or other similar “state” Blackworm names can create confusion if the seller does not clearly identify the actual worm being sold.
If the product is truly Blackworms, the seller should be able to clearly explain that it is made from Lumbriculus variegatus. If the listing uses a “state” Blackworm name but does not provide the scientific name, customers should be cautious.
Also be careful with listings that use phrases like:
-
“Blackworms / Tubifex”
-
“Tubifex Blackworms”
-
“Black Worms” without clearly identifying the worm
-
Products that show Tubifex but market themselves as Blackworms
-
Listings that do not provide a scientific name
-
Sellers that cannot confirm the product is made from Lumbriculus variegatus
Those phrases can be confusing, and in some cases, they may be used to make a different or lower-cost worm product sound like premium Blackworms.
If a product is truly Blackworms, the seller should be able to clearly explain that it is made from Lumbriculus variegatus. If the listing says Tubifex, Tubifex tubifex, or does not clearly provide the scientific name, customers should be cautious.
